江ノ電に、20年ぶりの新型車両が登場しました。

2006年の500形以来となる新型700形。2026年4月19日に営業運転を開始したばかりの車両に、さっそく乗ってきました。

車窓から見えたのは、40年前に通った鎌倉高校前。

海も、坂道も、駅の雰囲気も、ずいぶん変わったようでいて、どこかあの頃のままです。新しい車両に乗りながら、昔の自分に会いに行くような、不思議な時間でした。

もっとも僕は当時、家から江ノ電で通学していたわけではありません。実は雨の日も風の日もオートバイで通っていました。大混雑の江ノ電で通うより片道30分以上短縮できたんです。

40年たったのだから、もう時効でしょうか。笑

A New Era for the Enoden—Its First New Train in 20 Years.

The Enoden has welcomed its first new train in two decades.

The new Series 700, the railway’s first completely new model since the Series 500 debuted in 2006, entered regular service on April 19, 2026. Naturally, I couldn’t resist taking a ride.

Outside the window, I caught sight of Kamakura Kōkō-mae Station, where I commuted to high school some forty years ago.

The sea, the winding hillside roads, and even the station itself all seem to have changed over the years—yet somehow, they remain exactly as I remember them.

Riding this brand-new train felt strangely like traveling back to meet my younger self.

That said, I should confess that I didn’t actually commute to school on the Enoden back then.

Rain or shine, I rode my motorcycle to school every day.

It cut more than 30 minutes off my one-way commute compared with squeezing onto the famously crowded Enoden.

Forty years have passed now, so I suppose the statute of limitations has expired.

Or at least, that’s what I’m telling myself. (Laugh.)
