2026年FIFAワールドカップ ベスト8を前に、僕が選ぶ「世界最強ベスト11」
ワールドカップも、いよいよベスト8が出揃いました。
ここまで来ると、どのチームにも世界最高峰の選手が揃っています。それでも、「今、世界で最も強い11人を選ぶとしたら？」という問いには、僕のようなワールドカップ時期限定の「にわか」サッカーファンでも、一度は挑戦してみたくなるものです。今年はフィラデルフィアでフランス戦もこの目で観ましたしね。あの時はフランスが勝つと思っていたんですが、どうなるでしょうか。
過去にはペレやマラドーナをはじめ、数え切れないほどのレジェンドたちがいました。彼らが築いた歴史と功績は決して色褪せるものではありません。
しかし、「誰が史上最高だったか」と、「今、最も強い選手は誰か」は別の問いです。
スポーツ科学、栄養学、トレーニング理論、リカバリー、データ解析、さらにはAIを活用した戦術分析まで、競技を取り巻く環境はこの数十年で劇的に進歩しました。
だからこそ、純粋に競技レベルだけを比較するなら、現代のトップ選手たちは人類史上最も高いレベルでプレーしていると言ってよいでしょう。
もちろん、それはペレやマラドーナの価値を下げることではありません。彼らはその時代の常識を覆し、現代サッカーの礎を築いた開拓者です。
偉大さは時代を超えます。しかし、競技レベルは科学とともに進化する。
そんな考え方で、2026年ワールドカップを見ながら、僕なりの現役世界ベスト11を選んでみました。

My World Best XI Ahead of the Quarterfinals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup
The FIFA World Cup has finally reached the quarterfinal stage.
At this point, every remaining team is filled with world-class talent. Even so, the question “If you could choose the strongest starting eleven in the world today, who would they be?” is one that even a casual football fan like me—who becomes fully immersed only during the World Cup—can’t resist trying to answer.
This year, I even had the opportunity to watch France play in Philadelphia. At the time, I was convinced France would go all the way. We’ll soon find out whether that prediction holds true.
Throughout history, football has been blessed with countless legends, from Pelé to Diego Maradona and many others. Their achievements and the legacy they left behind will never fade.
But asking who was the greatest player of all time is a different question from asking who is the strongest player in the world today.
Over the past few decades, sports science, nutrition, training methodology, recovery, data analytics, and even AI-driven tactical analysis have transformed the game.
For that reason, if we compare players purely in terms of competitive performance, today’s elite footballers are arguably playing at the highest level in the history of the sport.
That observation does not diminish the greatness of Pelé or Maradona in any way. They were pioneers who redefined what was possible and laid the foundations of modern football.
Greatness transcends generations. Performance evolves with science.
With that perspective in mind, and inspired by the 2026 FIFA World Cup, I’ve put together my own World Best XI among today’s active players.
