――Back to the Future ミュージカルをロンドンで観て――

ロンドンに到着し、空港で荷物を待つあいだ、まずやったのはスマートフォンを開き、今夜のウェストエンドの演目を検索することだった。

ちょうど宿泊先の近くで上演されていたのが、前回観ることが叶わなかった『バック・トゥ・ザ・フューチャー』のミュージカル版。

これはもう運命だと思い、即座にチケットを予約した。

そして夜。アデルフィ・シアターの幕が上がった瞬間、あの「88マイルの衝撃」が、四十年の時を越えて目の前に蘇った。

1985年に公開された映画『バック・トゥ・ザ・フューチャー』。

その時間旅行の物語が、いまやミュージカルという新しいフォーマットで再構築されている。

スクリーンの中ではなく、実際の舞台の上で動くデロリアン。

立体音響に包まれる“時間跳躍”の瞬間。

そして観客全員が少年少女に戻るような、あの高揚感。

この舞台版は、映画の脚本家ボブ・ゲイル自らが手がけ、音楽はアラン・シルヴェストリとグレン・バラード。

オリジナル楽曲に「The Power of Love」や「Johnny B. Goode」など往年の名曲が織り込まれ、80年代と50年代を行き来するタイムスリップが“音楽”によってつながっていく。

科学と感情が交錯するその瞬間。

私が最も心を奪われたのは、デロリアンが宙に浮かび上がるシーンだった。

レーザー光線のような照明とスモークが交錯し、空間そのものが歪むような錯覚を覚える。

まるで低出力レーザーの干渉パターンが、舞台上で可視化されたかのようだった。

映画では時間を越えるために必要だったのはプルトニウムだったが、舞台では観客の“想像力”がそれを代替していた。

科学が芸術と出会うとき、そこに生まれるのは“没入”という名の奇跡である。

客席には、親子で来場している姿も多く見られた。

親世代は1985年を思い出し、子どもたちは未来を夢見る。
その二つの視線の交差こそ、この作品の本質なのかもしれない。

「過去を変えることはできない。
だが未来は、今ここから作ることができる。」

ドクのこの言葉が、観劇後もしばらく脳裏に残った。

科学者も医師も経営者も、すべて“未来の設計者”である。

その意味でこの舞台は、僕にとって最高の「科学的エンターテインメント」だった。

Upon arriving in London and waiting for my luggage at the airport, the very first thing I did was take out my smartphone and search for that evening’s West End shows.

By chance, playing at a theatre just a short distance from my accommodation was Back to the Future: The Musical—a show I had missed the last time I was in town.

It felt like destiny. I immediately booked a ticket.

That night, as the curtain rose at the Adelphi Theatre, the legendary “88 miles per hour” thrill burst back to life before my eyes—revived across four decades.

Back to the Future, the film originally released in 1985,
Its story of time travel has now been reimagined in an entirely new format: a musical.

The DeLorean, not on screen but on a live stage, came to life.
The moment of time jump, amplified by immersive surround sound.
And a soaring sense of excitement that made the entire audience feel like kids again.

This stage adaptation was created by Bob Gale himself, the original screenwriter of the film.
Music was composed by Alan Silvestri and Glen Ballard.
Iconic classics like “The Power of Love” and “Johnny B. Goode” are woven in with new original songs, connecting the ’80s and the ’50s through the power of music.

The moment where science and emotion intersect.

What captivated me the most was the scene where the DeLorean lifted off and floated into the air.

Laser-like lighting, swirling smoke—it created a surreal illusion, as if space itself was bending.
It felt like a visual representation of a low-powered laser interference pattern, brought to life on stage.

In the film, plutonium was the fuel required to travel through time.
But on stage, that role was replaced by something far more powerful: the imagination of the audience.

When science meets art, what is born is nothing short of a miracle—called immersion.

I noticed many families in the audience—parents and children enjoying the show together.
The parents, reminiscing about 1985.
The children, dreaming of the future.

Perhaps that very crossing of two different gazes is the heart of what this story is all about.

“You can’t change the past.
But the future can be created—starting right now.”

Even after the show ended, Doc’s words lingered in my mind.

Scientists, doctors, entrepreneurs—we are all architects of the future.

In that sense, this show was the ultimate in scientific entertainment for me.

An outstanding, immersive experience that lets you feel the magic of the film firsthand.
