It is said that there are as many as 4,000 mosques in Medina. I visited several of the key ones, especially the largest of them all — the Prophet’s Mosque. Beneath its green dome lies the resting place of Muhammad. This is as far as non-Muslims are allowed to go. Inside, countless devoted Muslims are offering their prayers.
