This morning, when I went to the international counter at Riyadh Airport, I was told that there was no return ticket for me. Even though I’ve traveled internationally over 400 times during my 20 years of business trips (about 20 times a year), this was the first time something like this happened.
It seems the staff at Booking.com didn’t reconfirm the ticket, which was the cause of the issue. Although my name was in the airline’s system, there was no ticket under my name, so I wasn’t allowed to board the flight. When I contacted Booking.com, they just kept saying they were working on it. And then, the counter staff told me that the check-in deadline was approaching.
When I asked what I should do, I was told the only option was to book a ticket on another airline to Tokyo. But after checking all the flights, it was impossible. My only choice was to return to Riyadh. It really hit me that without speaking proper English, I would have been stuck here.
To change my mood, I booked a room at the Hilton, which had a beautiful night view right in front of the airport. By around 11 p.m., I checked into a hotel in Riyadh.
I told the front desk staff that my flight had been canceled, so I had to return to Riyadh. As soon as I said that, everyone gathered around and said, “There must be a reason for this. Everything happens according to God’s will.” That response really moved me, especially after learning about Islam during the past 10 days.
After two hours, I finally received a message from Booking.com, confirming that they had booked an alternative flight for me for tomorrow. They also said they would cover the hotel cost, apologizing for the inconvenience and offering to pay me 15,000 yen. They asked if that was acceptable.
I had heard bad things about Booking.com, but I didn’t expect it to be this bad. After reading online reviews, I found out that others had even paid for a hotel only to find that it was in a grassy area, and some people had suffered much worse. Since it’s a foreign company, there’s no guarantee of a refund. This was my first time using it because my schedule was complicated, with multiple cities involved. But I’ll never use them again. Well, I’ll try to look at it as just another interesting story.
I’ll be two days late returning to Japan, but fortunately, I had asked an adjunct professor to take care of the outpatient clinic the day after I return, and since it’s also a holiday, I won’t be causing too much trouble for anyone. So, I felt a little more at ease.
However, I’m still unsure about whether I’ll actually be able to board the new flight booked by Booking.com tomorrow.
That part is still making me anxious.
