昨日はゴルフ医科学研究所にてシャトーヌフ・デュ・パプ7本の飲み比べの会でした。初参加の人もいらっしゃり参加人数15名ほど。その後はJOYSOUNDのハイレゾカラオケで盛り上がり、盛会で終わりました。ありがたいことに最後にサプライズで誕生会までしていただき、僥倖の至りでした。誕生日は来週なんですがね。
ここ10年ほどで、ブルゴーニュは「好きだから飲むワイン」から「覚悟して開けるワイン」へと変わってしまいました。グラン・クリュはもちろん、村名クラスですら簡単には手が出ません。その反動のように、いま確実に評価を上げているのが南ローヌです。
南ローヌは畑面積が広く、生産量も多い。また、ブランド投機の対象になりにくい。ブルゴーニュが「希少性の経済学」に巻き込まれたのに対し、南ローヌはまだ“飲む人のためのワイン”の位置にいるのが大きいですね。
南ローヌの中心品種はグルナッシュ。そこにシラー、ムールヴェードルなどが加わります。単一品種で“テロワールを極限まで表現する”ブルゴーニュとは対照的に、南ローヌはアンサンブルで完成度を高める思想です。年ごとの気候変動をブレンドで吸収できるため、品質が安定しやすいのもメリット。さらにブドウも強いので、30年以上の熟成が可能なのも魅力です。
素晴らしいワイン達でした。
Yesterday, we held a tasting event at the Golf Medical Science Institute featuring seven bottles of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. We had about 15 participants, including several first-time attendees. Afterward, we kept the energy going with high-resolution karaoke at JOYSOUND, and the evening ended on a high note. To my great surprise and gratitude, everyone even organized an early birthday celebration for me—my actual birthday is next week, but it was truly a delightful and humbling moment.
Over the past decade, Burgundy has shifted from being “a wine you drink because you love it” to “a wine you open with resolve.” Not only the Grands Crus, but even village-level bottles are no longer easy to reach for. As if in reaction to this, the Southern Rhône has been steadily gaining recognition.
The Southern Rhône has vast vineyard acreage and substantial production volume. It is also less prone to speculative branding. While Burgundy has been swept up in the “economics of scarcity,” the Southern Rhône still largely remains a wine for those who drink it.
The central grape variety of the Southern Rhône is Grenache, often complemented by Syrah and Mourvèdre. In contrast to Burgundy’s philosophy of expressing terroir to the extreme through single varieties, the Southern Rhône seeks harmony through blending. Because blends can absorb annual climate variation, quality tends to be more consistent. The grapes themselves are also robust, allowing for aging potential of 30 years or more.
They were truly magnificent wines.
