The real cause of a slice is not “direction,” but “face angle.”

When people first start playing golf, one of the earliest struggles they face is the slice.

In fact, what determines a ball’s initial launch direction and its curvature is not the swing path itself, but the clubface angle at the moment of impact.

That’s why, no matter how many swing videos you record, the slice doesn’t go away. I’ve calculated this before, and from a physics standpoint, clubface openness has about four times the influence compared to swing path.

The problem is that observing clubface angle directly is difficult without launch monitors like TrackMan.

Initial launch direction: about 80% determined by face angle at impact

Curvature (spin amount and direction): caused by the friction created by the difference between face angle and swing path (Face-to-Path)

In other words—
If the face is open at impact, slice spin will occur regardless of the swing path.

A common misconception is:

“I slice because my swing path is outside-in.”

But in reality, it’s because the swing is outside-in and the face is open relative to the path.

To put it in extreme terms:

Outside-in with a square to slightly closed face
　→ Pull or pull hook

Inside-out with an open face
　→ Push slice

So why do so many people believe the slice is caused by “direction”?

The reason is simple: most amateurs are doing both at the same time:

Outside-in swing path

Open clubface

But unless you separate cause and effect, you can’t fix the problem.

As for correction priorities:

First, learn to strike the ball with a closed (or at least square) face

Then, refine the swing path

Doing it in reverse doesn’t work.

If you fix only the path while leaving the face open, the ball will keep going right forever.
On the other hand, closing the face can instantly turn that slice into a clean fade.

A slice is not a problem of “how you swing,”
but of “how the clubface meets the ball at impact.”

The moment you understand this,
swing changes suddenly become much simpler.
